On 21 March ,2025, the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) hosted the National Rounds of the prestigious Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition which was instituted by the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) in 1992. This competition promotes the further development of space law and the expansion of the rule of law in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes.
The event brought together teams from various universities, including Africa Nazarene University, Strathmore University, Mount Kenya University - MKU , Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), and The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). The participating students engaged in intense and intellectually stimulating moot court sessions, demonstrating their legal expertise and advocacy skills in the specialized field of space law and international law.
Among the 5 teams, Africa Nazarene University emerged the winner with Strathmore University securing the first runners-up positions. Both teams will represent Kenya at the Africa Regional Round, scheduled to take place in South Africa from May 22nd to 24th, 2025. The winning team in the Africa Region will compete in the World Finals, which will be held at the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), scheduled for 29 September – 3rd October 2025, in Sydney Australia, as part of the 69th IISL Annual Colloquium in conjunction with the 76th IAC, the world’s largest convention of global space agencies and space industry.
A distinguished panel of judges, comprising Prof Isaac Rutenberg, Counsel Kuria Waithaka, Counsel Joyce Ndumia, Counsel Melanie Munyori, Counsel Joan Kiama, and Lt Col Arnette Naija. The sessions were coordinated by Joan Chesoni, KSA Board Director.
The DG KSA, Brig Hillary Kipkosgey highlighted the significance of such initiatives in fostering a new generation of legal professionals well-versed in space law, ensuring that Kenya remains actively engaged in shaping international space governance.
